Owner-Operator Opportunities

A word from our President and CEO.

Owner operators have been the backbone of perishables transportation for decades. Although our current recession has forced many out of their own trucks, opportunities still exist. If you are looking for year-round work and consistent settlements, you may want to give Brent Redmond Logistics LLC the opportunity to work with you.

Recessions will come and go and although refrigerated transportation remains challenging we who have chosen it as our niche in the transportation business know that a hungry nation will continue to purchase the food that we deliver. Rates may continue to drop in the short term however, the light at the end of this recession burns bright. There lies the opportunity.

The following are just some of the opportunities that may exist for you at Brent Redmond Logistics LLC.

You may consider working primarily in Southern California between Los Angeles and the Riverside distribution centers pulling our Company 53 foot refrigerated trailers. Although many other load opportunities exist, much of the work of our Escondido California Office consists of daily direct store deliveries from Riverside. Weekly settlements for this work average $2,500 to $3,000 with weekly mileage averages of 1,300. Although work is available everyday, five day work weeks may be available. Older fully depreciated tractors may work well here. However, they must be in very good condition subject to our approval.

If running to and from the Pacific Northwest is your preference, you may consider working for our Fife Washington office. Contractors may utilize their own 53 foot refrigerated trailers or pull ours. Average weekly mileages for a single driver can be 2,500 with settlements of $3,500 to $5,000. We specialize in less than truckload frozen and chilled freight between California, Arizona and the Pacific Northwest. Straight truck loads of salad products and frozen food are also delivered to and from various growing regions, metro areas and Company dock facilities.

While working for our Main Terminal located in Hollister, California you may wish to move though the various load opportunities or work with our staff to find a consistent route. Many types of work are available from local retail deliveries to interstate/intrastate line hauls and drop and hook loads. The weekly average settlements and mileage are about the same at this office as with the Pacific Northwest $3,500 to $5,000 and 2,500.

Loads destined for the Bay Area Produce Markets are consolidated at our Los Angeles, California facility on a daily basis. Contractors may utilize their own trailers or pull ours. Several current contractors utilize these loads as their year around backhauls. Although some seasonal volume changes do occur this business remains consistent year after year. Load payouts can range from $800 to above $1,200 depending on mileage and stop pay.

To fairly distribute trailer fueling cost, eliminate the fuel pay and reimbursement game and reduce theft we prorate all trailer fueling cost based on revenue earned. Each contractor is charged for trailer fuel as a percentage of their weekly settlement pre tax. Brent Redmond Logistics LLC will pay state and federal road taxes and file for the appropriate annual refunds. Although most trailer fuel is purchased through wet hose terminal deliveries each contractor is issued a Brent Redmond Logistics LLC trailer fueling card should they need to fuel a trailer. Because fuel is prorated among all participants the temptation to drop trailers half full or to steal fuel is greatly diminished. All our trailers have anti theft devices installed. It’s simple, fair and saves everyone time and money.

Much like a real estate brokerage, Brent Redmond Logistics LLC generates its revenues by retaining a percentage or set amount of revenue from each freight bill. With the exception of unloading, all monies including any fuel surcharges that pass through our company are subject to a brokerage fee. Sales and marketing, rate negotiation, billing and collections, operations planning and claims resolution are just some of the services Brent Redmond Logistics LLC provides.

Although there are several different settlement packages our basic method is as follows.

Contractors are paid 84% of the billed freight when utilizing their own trailer and 72% of billed freight when utilizing BRL provided trailers. Contractors also receive 85% of any fuel surcharges collected and up to $40 per extra stop. 100% of all paid unloading charges will be reimbursed with timely communication and clear original receipts.

There are some deviations to the above including hourly and mileage pay agreements and stop pay other than $40 per stop. Specific payment schedules can be provided for each situation upon request.

All independent contractors are asked to install and utilize our Qualcomm system of tracking and communication at a cost of $35 per week. Those contractors who chose not to install Qualcomm are paid 1% less and will not be utilized with certain accounts requiring its usage or in the event a so equipped contractor is equally available. The rental fee is used to off set the cost associated with Qualcomm including user fees, depreciation, maintenance, installations and removals and future upgrades to the system including software integration.

Not everyone who applies will be accepted. You must have refrigerated transportation experience, have or be willing to acquire a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) and supply us with references. If you own your own trailer it must meet current CARB requirements including the display of your ARB number. You must have your own authority and a valid commercial driver’s license. You must provide proof of enrollment in a DOT approved drug consortium and adequate insurance coverage. If you currently do not meet all the above requirements we may be able help you with or direct you to the resources needed. Please ask.
